Something to ponder.....
I just came to know recently from a friend of mine currently studying in RCSI (Royal School of Surgeon, Ireland) that they have 25 study weeks. How true is that? This really leaves me with many question marks.....
"Why so?" I asked.
"Oh...that is because our course is an INTENSIVE one!" he claimed.
"Really???!? Intensive???" I ponder.
What does that suppose to mean? We, medical students in Russia study for 36 weeks (that does not include 4 weeks of practical during our summer vacation!)...this sums up to a 40 weeks, altogether! Why the vast difference? Furthermore, our medical course is a full 6 years whereas it is 5 years there. Does that mean that they are "better-off" than us being able to cram every knowledge a "good" doctor should know? Or does that mean that RUS. graduates are better due to a thorough, more widely covered syllabus? What about other countries? Hmmm.....

well, we can't really compare, can we? sigh...and hey, i realised a typo in my last comment...ahem, that's not my point...i guess what we think (myself included) are somewhat biased...what u typed, 40 weeks compared to 25, thorough, wide syllabus instead of cramming 'knowledge'... I don't think you have to ponder anymore. Which is better? Haven't you decided on that already?
Shrug...but my fren sed its 25 weeks! Hmm..well, i think its da individual dat counts, not da institute? wat say u? take ray yank as a good example *cough*
Even Cambridge University Medical School also has 25 week curriculum for its first year course...
RCSI system is different. it is very clinical based. we learn 5 subjects in less than 2 yrs, having the first professional exams in February 2006. tats one year and 4 mths from Oct 2004! can u imagine cramming all anatomy, biochem, physio, pharma and also psycho? however, after february 2006, we will be going to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin for clinical training. the unique part of RCSI is when medical students usually go to hospital starting from 3rd year, RCSI students get the clinical exposure right from 2nd year. and in Beaumont, there are only two subjects, Microbiology and Pathology. after that...God knows...tats all... hope ur satisfied with my explaination.
oh by the way, we do have 2 projects going on in 1st year. the first one is psychology (health&society)group project which we are doing now and due in May. the next one in to be brought back home for the 4 mths break (combined biomedical sciences individual project). all marks are continuous and will lead to the 1st professional exams in spring 2006. so it is a continuous assessment. RCSI is one of the most expensive medical schools in the world. can u imagine paying 33000 euro a year? thats more than RM 150000 a year, only tuition fees. accommodation in city centre can cost up to 5000 euro a year (minimum, without bills). so living in dublin is extremely costly. well, tat doesnt mean living in moscow is cheap. it is also expensive but RSMU fees are definitely cheaper than RCSI. anyway, it doesnt matter where u graduate from as long as u have the passion and skill to be a great and empathic doctor...
